There's actually more than 150.00 in scrap silver in the thing if none of the halves are 40 percenters. A person with a hammer would be the best thing that ever happened to this collection.

These have fetched over 200 bucks before.

Could be worth buying just to break apart for the coins.

It might have $150 in silver in it... I don't think it would be possible to rescue the coins without damaging them (rather, they're probably already damaged).

Yes, the coins can be considered nothing more than scrap. They were all hideously polished prior to being cast in the resin. The resin itself would have no effect on the metal, but the treatment the coins got beforehand ... is unfortunate.

Too bad you can't really determine melt value from the pics.

Chance, how are you determining that there is over $150 in silver in this thing? Based on the pics?

Someone sure has a job ahead, breaking those out.
I think you'd have to get the acrylic off for a dealer to give you melt.

Just using melt values from a popular online silver coin values calculator, and using the following figures to estimate melt:

roughly 30 dollars for a Morgan dollar, 15 dollars for a 90 percent half, 7.50 for a quarter, 3 bucks for a dime ... and enlarging the picture. Of course, the best way to determine exactly what's there would be to ask the dates on the Kennedy halves.

If the halves are all 90 percenters .... and the seller states "the other large coins are silver, before the clad." ... and there are 12 half dollars x 15 bucks or 180.00 ...add to that a Morgan dollar for sure.... another 30 dollars, and I see mercs in there too. Some of the roosevelts may be silver as well.

Just finding out the dates on the Kennedy half dollars would give you enough insight to decide whether or not you wanted to saw and smack the coins from their plastic prison. The acrylic will split away from the coins cleanly. I took a Morgan out of a paperweight .... no problem.

As if non-collectors don't think we're weird enough...

Yeah, I'd smash it too if it was worth it.

All you would need to get those out would be a metal container big enough for it to fit into and a gallon of Methyl Ethyl Ketone (MEK) from Lowes. It would dissolve that Lucite in no time flat.

BUT if not Lucite.
Actually I think there was a post some time ago about all the things coins were used for and that was there too. I thought a moderator would have by now found and referenced that one. Lots of interesting things there.
