The Otho came from Forum Coins, while the Sep. Severus came from Roy's Coin (Vcoins). The Hadrian Sestertius came from Palma Collections and the Caracalla came from Den of Antiquity (Vcoins) and the Hadrian AE22 and Constantine II came from ebay. The JC is a former Andrew McCabe coin.

So, as you can see, I shop around a lot. Perhaps coin shopping brings out my feminine side .

VCoins... I've heard about it in passing once or twice, but never really gave it a look. I'm guessing you have to register to buy anything from there?

Not at all. Vcoins is just a site where very reputable dealers list their coins. Give it a look see:

http://www.vcoins.com/

They do have an auction site you may want to look at as well,, but there you have to register in order to bid:

http://www.vauctions.com/Auctions/

Vcoins is very trustworthy site

Thanks JW for the site. Hopefully I'll be able to pick up a nice ancient or two off there.

Some very, very nice coins JW, the Septimius Severus Denarius is as you suggested in fantastic shape.

The Otho coin is the one I find most interesting - the 'Year of the Four Emperors' is a fascinating period and due to the incumbents short reigns coins are sparse and very expensive.

One of the most interesting stories from this time is that after Galba was murdered over 100 soldiers and guards attempted to gain credit for the act and thus ender themselves to Otho. A list of their names was drawn up as I believe a reward had been offered by Otho for killing Galba. Unfortunately 3 months later Otho killed himself and the list fell into the hands of Vitellius. Vitellius wanted to avenge the murder of Galba so had everyone on the list put to death!

Has the JC been holed and then filled?

First, the JC coin was holed, filled and mounted at some time. Andrew McCabe indicated he bought the coin in Nuernburg back in the 80's in this condition. He also thinks the plug may be very old, but of course, there is no way to tell.

Yes, the Constantine II coin is that green. And beautiful because of it.

Not many know, that Otho wore a wig and many of the better quality coins show the waves in the wig. Interesting that people were that vain even then. JC used to comb his hair forward to cover his receding hairline. Perhaps one of the first "comb-overs".

Isn't history fun?
