Having trouble here with RIC. I can find similar coins, but the obverse legend is wrong. I originally thought it was Lyons RIC VII 89, but again the obverse legend is wrong. Any help will be appreciated. JW

Nice find - its a 'Not in RIC'. http://www.forumancientcoins.com/no...7lyo-90.htmlI really like the captives in exerge, I came upon a lot of these online when I was looking for Sol coins with captives in field or mintmarks. As you can see from the link it has been listed in Bastien (Lyon II no. 28), I would suspect its a pretty rare coin.

Thanks. I spent hours looking through RIC. I guess I'd still be looking, eh? I greatly appreciate your help. I wonder how rare the coin is. Do you know of any where to look for rarity?

I forgot to mention I cleaned this coin out of a batch of 50 coins I bought about two years ago. Its been sitting in olive oil most of that time.

Maybe the rarity is listed in the Bastien books? Not sure as I dont have them and have been unable to find versions online. If its not in RIC and its omission isn't a mistake then I would guess on their scale it would have to be considered an R5?

Well, I think I will make it my mission for the rest of this evening to see if I can out about the rarity. R5 could mean I have found a very rare coin, but I find it hard to believe I found it among some very cheap crusty coins. I only paid $2 each.

RIC 89,89 var and 90 are all listed as R5 so I would assume this should be the same? PL must stand for PECVNIA LVGDVNVM - maybe PRIMA LVGDVNVM? 320ish date? Similar coins were minted for Con I, Crispus and Licinius so what (if anything) do the captives signify? Maybe a victory over barbarians? I think you should add these to tonights homework assignment too

I'm still working on it. So far I've been able to find the following about a Crispus coin with two captives in exergue:
" The unique incorporation of captives within the mintmark celebrates Crispus' military victories in Germany."
