Thinking of purchasing these two coins of Augustus. They look authentic to me, what do you guys think? Thanks. Augustus? Augustus?

I believe both coins are Augustus. The one with Nike advancing left is: RPC 1651, ANS 677, BMC 23, SGI 32

OBV: VIC AVG, Nike standing left on globe, holding wreath and palm
REV: COHOR PRAE PHIL, three military standards

Struck at Philippi

The other coin I will have to a little research

The top one is a Spanish provincial. 27 BC - 14 AD?

PERM CAES AVG Bare head left
IVLIA TRAD Within Oak Wreath
Cohen-151 RPC 99 SGI-18 Sear-538, Heiss 336

It looks very convincing to me - Jango, does the seller include weights and measures?

BobbyHelmet beat me to it, but I found it. The other coin is for sure:

Augustus AE24 of Julia Traducta, Spain. PERM CAES AVG, bare head left / IVLIA TRAD in wreath. SGI 18, RPC 99, Cohen 151

Both look genuine to me.

The Nike is 17 mm and the Spanish provincial is AE25 (25 mm?). No weights indicated.

I'm not sure how much the seller is asking, but neither coin is in the greatest of shapes. I have two of the Nike coins with the best of two costing me $20.

The Spanish coin is of more interest to me, only because I've spent some time in the Southern provinces of Spain and I have several coins from there.

I know they're not pretty, but I'm not paying too much for them. I don't have any Romans from this era (just started collecting ancients several months ago- my oldest is a Gallienus), so I'd thought these two were pretty good for the price (haven't bought them yet though).

If you like them and the price is right I'd say go for it. The sizes are fine and they look good to me and the others. I think authenticity wise your fine.

I like these battered old coins, they have a kind of honesty about them, these are not so bad you cant ID them and they are just showing their age a bit, wouldn't we all after 2K. I'd advise anyone making first purchases in these areas to start at the bottom and work up, both quality and price wise. It helps you build up the knowledge.

Also of note, the seller has in the description of the Spanish provincial that it has a flan error.

Bobbyhelmet is correct. You should buy these coins if the price is right. And he is also correct about starting with coins that won't break the bank so you can learn from them, as we all have. After many years you will be able to just look at the image on a coin and be close with attribution.

As for the flan error, the only thing I can see that might be called a flan error would be the indentation. Perhaps the seller is saying the indent was there when the coin was struck. I certainly do not know. Let us know what you think when you get the coins.

JW, the Augustus coins are on VCoins, and when I go to checkout, it takes me to a page where I either sign in or register. And they are purchases, not auctions. Maybe they changed it so that purchases require registration?

I have been buying on Vcoins for a long time and its possible I don't remember registering. I believe, though, that the only reason to register is to give them your method of payment and a shipping address. I dunno for sure, but I can tell you it is one of the most reputable sites on the internet.
