This coin looks really odd. If it is genuine, it has seen a rough life, possibly in a fire. IF it is genuine. I searched RIC, but I could not find any reference, but on ACSearch, I found a similar coin (much better looking and in much better shape). It is a Siliqua (3,33 g), Constantinople mint; Diademed head of Constantius II gazing upwards to right.Reverse: CONSTANTIVS CAESAR, Victory striding left, holding wreath in her right hand and palm branch with her left.

Anyone care to opine about this coin? I'm going to check Bastien, but I wanted to get this out to see if anyone can assist me.

JW

I found this coins look-a-like in the Not In RIC under Constantine II. I'm just not sure this coin is genuine.

The letters look odd. Also, the size and angle of the neck on yours greatly differs that on the other forum. It could just be a difference in the die, but then again...maybe not. Perhaps Sap could weigh in, but I think that yours is (unfortunately) a fake :(

I looked at this coin at 400 magnification and IMO it's genuine. As you say it's had a hard life and unless it was offered at a low price I would stay away from buying it.

Very odd looking coins, both yours and the 'not in RIC'.

I wouldn't like to say either way, it looks too fake to be fake if that makes sense!

Yes, I do understand what you mean. I'm leaning towards FAKE mainly because the lettering looks wrong. Too bad. It might have made for another rare coin in my collection instead of landing in my growing pile of fakes. I'll wait a bit to see if there are any other respondents before placing it in either group. Thanks

I think there are several places or things you can go to authenticate it. Try them, too! Better safe than sorry.

Not only the lettering, but something just doesn't seem right about it. Kind of has that cheap cast copy look to it, especially the reverse. I mean, there's still a chance it could be real, though. But yeah, I'd take it to someone specialized that can make some kind of judgement on it.

I've been informed it is a fake and that it was made from known steel dies used to create the fake. Here is the positive image of that die:

Sad, but not unexpected. Into the fakes pile it goes.
