Coins are made out of all sorts of metals - it depends on which country and time period you're talking about. Most of the people here on the forum that talk about "scrap value" or "metal value" of coins are talking about silver-based or copper-based coinage, since with the recent increases in metal prices their scrap value is usually far higher than the face value stated on the coins themselves. For example, an American silver quarter (pre-1964) has a face value of 25 cents but a metal value of $7.27 at current prices. You can look up websites like currencydebasement to find out composition and melt values of obsolete and current coinages from various countries.

I challenge CCF'ers to come up with a list of metals from which coins have been made. The usual suspects? gold silver copper
I can think of at least a dozen others, but I will leave that to the rest of you.
Perhaps we can also make a list of alloys.

Done that, been there before. I would think the moderators could find an old post about all the materials coins have been made from. Some of the other members have that uncanny ability to find all sorts of past posts.

Surprisingly, I cannot find a single thread discussing all of the different materials. There are numerous threads discussing individual alloys for a particular series or group.

Try looking for "elements", for instance, and you can find fascinating threads like this one. On the third page of that thread is a link to Tony Clayton's list of coinage elements and alloys.

I actually found that thread in my search, but did not read to the third page. I wish I had remembered that link was there. See, Carl, I do not remember everything I read.
