I have some slabbed Buffalo Proof coins, and until this week they were all 2009 and newer. I picked up a 2006 this week for a good price relative to most realized prices on coins that actually sell on ebay. Mine are all NGC Proof 70 Ultra Cameo. I put several of them layed out under my halide lamp and was surprised to see that the detail was much more striking on the 2006 and it appears that it may be slightly higher in relief than the newer ones. The newer coins have a chalkier, much lighter color on the raised surfaces, and the 2006 is simply a much better looking coin. There is a lot more depth to the fine details. I know that each die has its own character, but I was just amazed at the difference. I think any future purchases will be of the 2006 coins because there is a marked difference between it and my 2009's to 2011's.

I still don't know how to post pics. I guess it would help if I bought a digital camera to start!

Indeed it would. The good news there is that a decent digi-cam is cheaper and better than they were just a couple of years ago.

If you have a cell phone that photographs & photobucket. They will automatically down load to photobucket a few minutes after you take them, then just move them to hear. I hope this helps.

I am the last person on Earth without a cell phone. I do have an iPad but it's tje first model so it doesn't have a camera. I had never even been online until two or three years ago.

The US Mint currently employs a laser etching technique on proof dies to create the cameo effect, formerly done by micro-abrasive blasting and chemical pickling. I am not sure if all proof dies are prepared this way now, but I do know for sure that it is used on the National Parks quarters and could be a possible explanation for the differences you see.

I think you're right Bio. The raised surfaces on my Buffaloes and Silver Proof ATB Quarters are really extremely chalky and microscopically pebbled it seems. It definitely gives it really deep contrast in surfaces, but some of the minor details are a little less obvious on the newer ones. I'm glad that I got the 2006. I love the Buffalo design and the 2006 shows the finest details that make the design so great.
