Pulled this roll hunting yesterday. at first glance I thought PMD, but after looking at it with the loupe I'm guessing...die chip? cant be PMD because the "D" is still perfect. any thoughts?
The cause of this is usually because the mintmark tends to be a spot where the bevel of the design didn't work out and there ends up being a spot in the design where the relief is straight-up. This causes the die to slice into the surface of the coin like a knife exposing the zinc underneath. When that happens the highly reactive zinc starts to turn into zinc oxide causing expansion, thus a bubble. The bubble often bursts through the thin copper shell on the coin causing these ugly marks.
