I have never really sold a lot on ebay. What percentage of what you sell on ebay goes back to ebay and paypal fees? I know you can sell gold/silver on ebay for a higher price than some other places but is it worth it after the fees are subtracted? Thanks for your answers!

they take 15% [12%+3%] of First $50 to ebay and paypal fees, then after $50+ it's 9% fees [6%+3%]. so sell in big amounts for less fees. paypal charges you 2.9%, I say 3% close enough

Every seller now receives 50 free auction-style insertions a month. You can list an item with any start price and if it does not sell, you have no fees. ebay Final Value Fees(FVF) are 9% of the total sale including shipping(maximum fee of $100). PayPal takes another 39 cents+2.9% of the total sale. http://pages.ebay.com/help/sell/fee...#fvf_auction

Google " ebay fees calculator" and you'll find numerous official and and unofficial sites that allow you to estimate at very high accuracy what the fees will be given a set of perimeters. the % in fees ebay charges depends on auction style, starting price, ending price, and shipping cost. PayPal is more stable but also changes between 2-4% depending on the method of payment the buyer selects (foreign currency conversion, echeck, paypal balance, credit card, etc) A good rule of thumb I use for estimating sales of items under $100 is at least %15 in fees when it's all said and done.

Thanks everybody! I think I will use the 15% rule of thumb for fees when trying to figure out if it is worth using ebay or not.

Quote: 9% of the total sale including shipping(maximum fee of $100) So the total a seller has to pay is $100, excluding paypal charges, no matter the total final sell price, or are you saying $100 max on the included shipping cost?

The maximum ebay FVF is $100, regardless of the final sale price. As a percentage, the FVF decreases for any ending bid of $1111 or higher.

Actually, the fees on E-Bay depend on how you wish to list your item.
I normally list my item as an open auction. If you are going to do an open auction, with no mandated preset price, the fees are as follows.
9% of the actual price the item sells at (including shipping if the customer must pay) 2.9% of the actual price is charged by PayPal to handle the payment process
So, if you sold a coin and the final bid was $100, here is what you would pay.
$100 x .09 = $9.00 final transaction fee $100 x .029 = $2.90 payment handling fee
Total fees are $11.90. The bid was $100. You clear $88.10.
This being said, I personally think the fees are a bit high and am looking at other venues to sell some of my coins.

Figure on 11% to 12% total fees when selling on ebay (unless you are a top rated seller). Also keep in mind that when accepting large dollar amount payments from international buyers, payal will charge an additional "cross-border fee" which is usually another couple of dollars. If you are dealing with foreign coins, you kind of have to include international buyers if you want to get fair prices for your coins.
