Picked up this quite interesting European medal the other day.
57mm diameter, dated 1627. Made of a base metal - pewter/zinc like. Has a city scene on one side, a series of crests on the other. Does anyone have any info on whereabouts this piece might be from? Several photos :

Pretty neat, whatever it is! My first thought was Jerusalem from the combination of Hebrew, latin and the obverse symbolism (palm tree is a Jewish symbol, I think). But then I spotted what appears to be "ANGOLA" on the reverse beneath the crests, which appear to be German / Austrian. Angola was primarily under Portuguese influence in 1627, so you wouldn't expect Hebrew. The latin there reads "Aid to My Master", I believe and on the obverse, the left side reads "to protect rocky iova under ----- force". I'm kinda thinking Northern African continent, which was under German control, but not in the 1600's, rather, not until the 1800's.

Sorry I couldn't be more help, but there are a lot of clues here! Cool piece!

In the cartouche with the palm tree I read it as singula iunctim, which depending on the prceeding word could mean something like together but individual

The three coats of arms in the central disc identify the origin. The top is the arms of the Holy Roman Empire, the bottom two are the Greater and Lesser arms of the city of Nuremberg.

The same triple-arms arrangement, as well as city views, often appear on thalers, multiple-thalers and gold multiple-ducats from this city.

Thanks all for your thoughts and information. That should be enough to go on to research a bit further hopefully - probable location with your translations of the text should help turn something up. I'll report back with any new info!
