This gargantuan round piece of bronze was with a miscellaneous assortment of coins, including cash coins. I'm guessing that it's some kind of charm, and I'm really more interested in what the characters stand for.
I only know Chinese so I can't provide the Vietnamese pronunciation but the four characters on the reverse (bottom image) translate as "prince, father, son, minister".
This is a reference to "The Analects" by Confucius when he speaks about the "rectification of names" and explains that good government is when the prince is the prince, the minister is the minister, the father is the father, and the son is the son.
Thanks for the translation, Gary. Very interesting and even inspiring. It's a keeper, then, and I'll put it on display -- and thanks to you, if anyone queries its significance, I can now tell them what it means.
