Hey guys I bought 5 uncleaned Romans found in France from the Dirty Old Coins online store on September 4, 2011. As of the arrival of today's mail on September 19, 2011 I have not received these coins.

I know from experience that this is a very reputable site, so I am not overly concerned that there is mischief afoot. However, since the order was shipped on the 5th, I am beginning to think my package is not coming. USPS First Class does not take two weeks to ship an envelope cross-country.

Anyway, I called and left a message on their business line outlining what I stated above. Do you think I am being too impatient or should I have reason to worry at this point?

I certainly know the feeling. I am so impatient. As of today, I've been waiting for a coin from Switzerland for over 4 weeks and I know for a fact the seller is extremely reputable. It seems that the USPS may be getting slower in the recent past. I wouldn't be overly concerned just yet. Many of these dealer do batch mailings, saving back items to be shipped all at once say once per week or so. It saves time and money. The coin seller you purchased from is very reputable.

I'm currently waiting on a coin paid for in July from Germany. Earlier in the year I bought a coin book from India which took 8 weeks and showed up repackaged by customs. I suspect my coin (and JW's?) is being check to see if they can confiscate it as stolen under their new politically correct rules.

Doug, Can you please elaborate on these new rules? Do they have anything to do with the UN rules on antiquities? I seem to remember something about signing a petition on the internet to prevent these rules from being enforced in the U.S. Thanks

Regards,

I was told in the UK Post Office last week I was not officially allowed to send coins to the USA. It was the first time they had ever said it to me, the lady was not able to elaborate on why.

Post into the US and Canada has been slow for a while now - pretty much since all of the trouble last Christmas. If I send my sister in Calgary a parcel it takes three weeks yet if she posts to the UK it takes about 10 days. Same sort of thing into and out of the US. I've thought hard about stopping sales to the US as buyers are not happy with 21 day deliveries but its a big market to exclude.

It could very well be the U.S. Postal Service. I have an idiot that delivers the mail to my address. I purchased a coin from Slovakia and I waited and waited. Finally, I wrote the seller who told me the date he mailed it and the tracking number. I went to the Post Office only to find the package has been sitting there for nearly 3 weeks. My postman swears he sent me a notice. Hogwash! I'm beginning to think the postal service here does not have high standards for hiring new employees. Sorry if I offended anyone out there. I know there are good mail carriers, but it seems I find the idiots or they find me.

SO Dirty Old Coins is in fact a very reputable site? What have you guys heard about them? I mean, their site is very tempting. Do the coins received match the quality promised?

And, of course, the question: IS it safe to give them your Credit card info as a form of payment?

The owners of that site are VERY reputable - indeed he has put a lot into the hobby through various publications etc.

I've never really dabbled in uncleaned Romans - though a few have passed through my hands - mainly because they are always less than what is hoped for and you are only setting yourself up for dissapointment. They are fun to start with - but unless you have endless time and patience people get fed up pretty quickly.

Bacchus2- Thanks for the response and assurance. So have your ordered from them? I actually do recall seeing their product "Roman Emperor in a Box" in the gift shop of the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) in Toronto. So I suppose that that may be evidence of their reputation.

No - I've never ordered from them - as I said I don't do uncleaned - but the site owner is visible on many online forums and is always approachable and friendly.

I got a lot of 5 uncleaned Romans in that last order (which arrived, btw). I was able to attribute one fully after just one rinse and scrub. Two others will be fully atributable with several months more work, and the remaining two are a lost cause. 60% is a good success rate IMO.

ancientcoinguy- Congrats on the success rate! So I take it that from your experiences that it is safe to use your credit card on their site? Good to know.

Old Dirty Coins also has "Balkan-region Late Roman bronze coins already cleaned and ready to display." Do you think that since they supposedly grade VG-VF that most will be on the lower end of that? I mean, since VF's tend to go for about $20 a piece, for $5 a pop even on the lower end seems like a fair price. Would you guys agree?

Just about any attributable coin is worth $5 to me. I've been lucky with coin lots for cleaning. My attribution rate is around 65% plus I've found at least two or three very rare coins that got by the first line of lookers.

As for dirtyoldcoins.com I've never purchased from them, but they are reputable for sure. They also subscribe to the highest numismatic ethical standards. But I do use their site a lot for research. Mostly as a starting point.

I don't think you can go wrong with this site or seller.
