I've been cleaning up some of the unnecessary coins and bank notes from my collection for a few weeks now, and I have come to the realization that I have a substantial amount of money saved up in old (series '69-'88) small portrait bills and star notes. Obviously I am going to keep at least some of them, but the vast majority of them have to go. Now here's the question:
Should I try to sell them to make a couple dollars on the side, or just save myself the hassle and spend them?
The vast majority are $1 bills (40+ star notes and 30+ old notes, going back to Barr) while the remainder are mostly $20s (about 15 lightly used bills from series '81-88 that a customer gave me several years ago) and a smattering of $5's and $10's. Some are crisp; some are tattered and worn.
I am pretty new at this -- I just this month started looking for star notes and ladders, etc. They are all worth more than their face value from what I have learned. So I would sell them -- besides, that way they will have a good home.
