Lincoln Cent 1959-D With Closed "r" In Liberty

coinhop Valued Member United States 53 Posts	Posted 09/17/2011 07:51 am Hi all, It's been a very long time since I've posted to this forum (just over 3 years in fact). But finally, I have a little more time again. Mostly, I've just been putting aside pocket change I come across that looks interesting. So lately, I have started learning about variety coins, particularly Small Cents. I found the following coin, a 1959-D Lincoln Cent. From what I can tell, it looks like the hole in the "R" in LIBERTY was broken off the die, since it is filled in on this coin. The stem of the "R" looks a little funky too, although at least the gouge is almost surely post-mint damage. I've looked through various sites with coin varieties and searched with Google using many different terms and could not find any references to a cent variety with this (IMO) rather prominent feature. Note: There is a small PMD scratch on the surface of the "R" lump as well. Any experts here have any ideas on this? coppercoins Pillar of the Community United States 7629 Posts	Posted 09/17/2011 10:47 pm This is called a die chip, and the reason you didn't find information on this "variety" is because it is not a variety. It's a rather commonly occurring thing with cents in the 50s and 60s. Basically nobody wrote about them because nobody really collects them. Report this Post to the Staff
