Hi,

Here is a recently acquired cob from potosi.
Not sure yet how I will clean it, and I find the green color of the coin suspicious (rings a bit differently than a pillar) - I may test silver with stone / acid.

I have to say that I am not an expert on cobs but from the limited number that I have seen, it does looks a bit odd. I am not sure if it is just the lighting but the coin almost seems like it is made of copper.

Yep, that's exactly what I was wondering.
What is white on the picture is white on the coin, but what looks brown is brown as well. High points are white though, so the brown part looks like dirt / oxidation / whatever.
The green oxidation is another hint as well.

The coin was sent back, but I've just been contacted by its new owner (it was resold)
Can someone confirm that this coin was fake ?
And in this case, if it's a contemporary fake or a recent one ? (I vote for recent ...)
A nice hint : the coin weights about 20g - a contemporary fake wouldn't have worked IMHO.

Hi Mathieu,

If there's one thing that says to me that they are fake, there is nothing about it that looks struck. It looks like a cast piece.

Yes, and actually a badly done ones :) Shield side is grainy/mushy and not well defined ... the holes all over the coin are more than odd ...
So it's a recent cast, made during the last century ? (maybe 40-60 years ago - don't look like a recent one, techniques are way better now)

Darn fakes look better than the reale ones. Pun intended.
