Hi,

Here is another recent one, what do you think about it ?
It's my first Carolus IV from Lima - those look more crude than other places ones.

The die here looks a bit used / dirty, the throat of the king is weak and with rusted dies traces in front of it.
Seems the V in PLVS is missing from the left pillar on the other side (the coin don't seem used)

I might be off completely here, but I think this one was cast. Here's why I think that:

1. Missing metal near the ear on the obverse and next to "P" assayer initial on the reverse, and the general surface condition with numerous raised areas of metal.
2. Excess metal near the edge - check out 9 o'clock on the obverse.
3. If you look at letters and the date, you'll see an interesting effect: almost looks like doubling, but if you look closer (especially obvious in "A" in GRATIA) you'll notice almost like a thicker outline of the letter, which I've seen happen in cast coins when metal cools and shrinks.
4. General lack of sharpness in design elements (portrait, coat of arms)

I hope I'm wrong. But this one doesn't sit well with me.

Well, I was thinking that the lima mint was minting poor coins ... :/
Anyway, this one and the cob coming from the same seller - smells bad.

Something else I noticed now, the edge from Gracia to Car... on the reverse seems to have a higher edge line.
The edge has the proper pattern, but the edge is not flat which gives an odd result. I'm not sure I could find the two overlap as the edge is not clean everywhere.
Will post pictures later, I got to go.

Thanks !

I am certainly not the most educated on counterfeit coins or fakes, but this coin is one that I would have passed on. I don't like the surface luster; it hints of casting to me. Also the denticles and excess on the edge of the coin near the CAROLUS on the obv. screams to me that something is wrong.

I didn't noticed most issues visible in hand on the coin's picture from the auction.
Here it is in case someone want to check it out :)

Some missing details didn't sound as crying, as the picture was a bit out of focus. The edge just seemed a bit damaged, in case here it looks odd.

The coin was a France only delivery, it's sometime a good way to get nice deals (we are not much in France to collect spanish coins) - but as it was often said here, greed don't help to get good deals ;)

From the photos listed on ebay, I don't see anything that would have set me off of the coin, except for the NO RETURNS ALLOWED bit by the seller. Never bid on coins that you cannot return should something turn out to be wrong with the coin.

Getting good deals is the name of the game! There was a time when ebay was a great place to get them. However, in the last decade, I've stopped even browsing on ebay for coins. I'd rather be able to see the coin in hand before making a decision.

Well, I don't care much about the no return allowed, I'll open a dispute and it will be settled with paypal.

When I don't know the seller, I never pay with anything than paypal.
It saved me once already - took over 3 monthes, but I managed to get my money back (minus the exchange rate which was lower).
The other times, I managed to settle the issue with the seller (4 times in the last year)

Yep, me too !
Looks like I still got a lot to learn ...
I returned the coin 2 days ago - but at least the seller pictures were not giving out much clues I did miss.
