I went to my 1st coin show today with my father. I fell in love with so many coins. About an hour after leaving, my father surprised me with a 1834 dime that I was staring at. He bought it for me because my birthday is next week.
I am hoping to get your opinions on it. With my inexperience, I rate it as a F12 Cleaned. Looking through the loop, I see dirt in the loops of the 8 and in the 4 so I think it was cleaned. It was also mark as LARGE 4. So I don't know if that adds value. Dad payed $35 for it. What do you guys think about it?
Thanks

This oldtimer regards this as a very respectable type coin. Most coins this old have been cleaned in some way or another, and your dime doesn't at all reflect a harsh cleaning. I concur with your overall Fine grade, yet the reverse looks VF. IMHO, F/VF, obverse/reverse. This coin would look nice in a 7070 album.

I looked at my Breen book, given your question about the large 4 - good observation! You MAY have snagged a scarce or rare variety here. Breen notes three large 4 varieties. Yours looks to me like Breen-3204. It's described as follows: "Large imperfect 4. Rare. Davis 4. Crossbar of 4 partly broken off. Leaves touch dentils in 3 places."

While this may sound like exciting news, and Breen was one of the foremost numismatic experts of all time, he did err at times in gauging the rarity of many varieties; this, over twenty years ago, since his book was written. Since he managed to point out and draw attention to ever so many varieties in every denomination, many more have been discovered. Let's see what some other CCF members say ... Good luck!

Red Book has the large 4 at $45 so it looks like you have a good looking coin at a good deal.

Thank you guys. I am really happy with this gift. And it looks even better in hand than in the pictures.

There are three listings in Breen, but they cover four varieties. Davis 4 is Breen 3204 but this coin is Breen 3205, it is either Davis 5 or 6. Sorry it is not one of the rare large 4 varieties (Davis 2 and 4).

Yes very nice circulated example. I'd be proud to have it if it were mine :-)
