So, as some of you know, I have been considering various directions for my collection to go. Any of these 4 directional changes will be massive, in the thousands perhaps 10s of thousands of dollars.

WIith the price of gold where it is, I am considering selling some. I have a bunch of half eagles, and I would consider selling the 17 libs to help fund this direction. SO that would get me over 5K to start with. I have 10 indian half eagles that I want to keep.

Option 1- Complete set of small cents:
I have a complete set of Lincoln cents right now including the big keys all the way up until 2009. I have the 1877 indian key, but none of the other Indian cents or flying eagles. The rest of the Indian cents will be moderately expensive as I still need the 09-s, but the MONSTER hail mary coin of this set for me to fully consider it complete would be the 1856 flying eagle, which would suck up all of my tradeable gold and more.

Option 2- Complete set of Barber quarters. I already have the 1896-s and quite a few of the commons, but I need the 2 biggies: the 1913-s and the 1901-s.

Option 3- Selling the libs and focusing on completing a set of Indian Half Eagles. I'm more than 1/3 of the way there with what I have. I'm not sure I can swing a 1929, but I would plan to get the 1909-O for sure and all of the other dates.

Option 4: Invest in a nice VF-XF Draped bust half eagle and or VF-XF capped bust half eagle to top off my gold type set(which is already fully complete down through the classic head level. Both very expensive.

Anyways, All of these options are actually quite even in my mind as far as what I would desire in my collection. Depending on the day, I may prefer one option over the other...but it varies. Given these options, what would you chose and why?

thanks for all of your support forum!

I vote for this. You have the 1877 (nice coin!) and, you need the 1909-S.
1856 FEC,
WOW!
I would concentrate first on the IHC's and not the FEC's. The only tough one is the 1856.
With your budget of $5,000, you should be able to at least complete a set of IHC's to be proud of, including all the FEC's minus the 1856.
I say, let's worry about that one later

Second choice.
Option 3

This is a simple one to answer. Do them all. Just take more time if your monitary situation isn't up to all for now but why choose any one of them. Do them all.

John,
There is no right answer on this.
All of our answers are going to be slanted by our own paticular favorite coin.
My first coin love is small cents as that was all I could afford as a 9 year old boy
in the late 1960's
So that is my biased opinion.
I have a complete set of small cents except the 1856.
It is not that expensive if you stay with lower grade semi key date Indians.
The old saying is buy low and sell high, and I believe Gold is overpriced right now, so I think this is a great time to sell your gold and put it into collectable coins.

Thanks for all of the input! I do think though, that if I sell a lot of gold, I will put it into one of the BIG coins for each respective series since I don't think I would be able to afford that one any other way. I am liking the idea of completing a small cent collection right now...hmm. Lots to consider.

Yeah, I would go for the small cents. Second would be half eagles.

I am still building a couple Dansco's but beside that, I find myself liquidating much of my collection, for key date coins.
Just visiting ebay, I found an 1856 FE severely corroded in VG details (ICG) for $4,950 and a PCGS VF20 for $10,000.
Not an inexpensive coin by any means but, one you cannot go wrong with in the long term investment wise.
John, that 1929 $5 would be a dream coin!
Amazing some of those mintages :o

John,
Another consideration is the investment angle.
Gold will go up and down, but the key dates usally gradualy
increase in price over time.

I think a lot of what will influence my decision is whether I see the right "big" coin in any of these series for the right price. If I found a decent 1856, I will delve full into the small cents. A nice 1901-s quarter would be enough to delve into the barbers. For now, I will hold my gold, and chip away at each of these sets, since I would eventually like to do as "just carl" answered, and do them all.

That's what I am doing
Chipping away at three Dansco's at the moment. I have decided to start a Seated Liberty dime Dansco. I have a few of the keys, and know this will be the toughest (coin wise and money wise) of my three sets. Some of these are just crazy money and, tough to acquire, especially the early CC's! This will be a life long venture and therefore, my final Dansco before I check out
John, keep us posted on whatever you decide
