Sounds like a sound stratagy John, Sometimes if all things are equal you go where you can find a good value on a key date and them fill in around that coin.

What do you think about this coin? http://cgi.ebay.com/WOW-Key-Date-18...em4cf8ea2ebfThe price seems just a tad high as is, but it has several things really going for it. 1. it is a business strike(they are more rare and valuable than the proofs), and I prefer the fact that they were struck in 1856. 2. It is CACed. Normally I dont care, but with this kind of money on the line, I appreciate another source telling me the coin is nice and problem free. 3. His shop is less than 2 hours from me. I'd imagine he'd be willing to go down on price if paid with cash outside of ebay. Also, for this kind of coin, I'd want to see in hand. 4. With gold soaring at 1750+, it may be a good opportunity to trade some half eagles. thoughts?

Nice coin John! Tell you what, for what you are getting, eye-appeal, originality, PCGS, and CAC, I'd say the price is reasonable. Yes, I much prefer biz strikes over the proofs. Good choice. Here is my thought on gold. By dumping now, yes, you have made a nice profit...that's what it's all about :) IMHO, there is still room for it to go substantially higher. So, do you dump the gold now at the $1750 level or, hold on. The $100,000 question only you can decide. Here is the nice thing my friend, you don't have to worry about the USPS losing it in the mail, you arrange for a pickup! Nice. John, it's a beaut! Highlight of any collection. Should you decide to go for it, give me a call. I would be happy to supply a second opinion as his shop is very close to me ;-)

Sell everything and get into Early American Coppers (Half & Large cents). These will keep you busy for the rest of your life. Probably won't complete them.

Thanks for the input Dave. I shot him an email to see how low he would go if bought with cash. I have mixed feelings about selling gold....it's so turmultous lately, the value of what I would need to trade can change by hundreds of dollars within a couple of hours. It may be good to wait and see where it settles anyways before proceeding(if it ever does settle). I would also imagine, dealers may be reluctant to pay a reasonable percentage with all these major swings.

Yeah, I know. Who knows when the backslide will really start on gold. I agree that dealers would more than likely try to throw you a lower than expected number to pay you with citing several factors. Hard call. That FEC is really nice! I don't know what I would do if I were in your situation. I've heard numbers like $2000-$3000 gold so who knows. I would have to hold a little while longer especially with the extreme stock market volatility. Down over 600 one day, up over 400 today. No one knows what the stock market is going to do. You ask 50 different analysts, you get 50 different answers. I would definitely start a FE/IHC set. I have been working on mine and have decided that is the one I am going to concentrate on until moving to my other sets right now. I love them. I'm keeping it more affordable at the Fine level. I find that coins in this level still have nice eye appeal without breaking the bank

John, That is a nice coin. Greysheet bid is 9,000 in VF With gold at an alltime high I would sell and buy it. But that is just me, you have to do what you feel comfortable with. I agree that the seller should give you a good break with cash since your saving him both ebay and paypal fees. Did he make you a counter offer yet ?

Dave, it looks like we're working on exactly the same set at the same grade! I'm hitting the IHC set too, grading between VG-VF. I purchased an F-12 1909-s recently, I'll post some photos when it arrives. Thanks for your input vanbroj! I'd been meaning to ask you about the GS bid. He hasn't responded to my email yet. But yeah, if I can get it around 9750 I'd be happy with that. They are so hard to find, period. And even harder to find the business strikes in decent F-VF. It really comes down to if I'm willing to part with the gold. I was originally trying to complete a full roll of half eagles, but the prices have shot up so significantly in the last couple of weeks, I'm a bit more leary about buying more.

Quote: I purchased an F-12 1909-s recently I still need it I will get it eventually I am also going with VG10-F12 coins That CDN bid does make it attractive. Gold is anyone's guess but I agree John, if I was in your shoes, I would not be buying any more $5's right now. I will be picking some more IHC's up at Long Beach.

John, How much would the ebay fees be on a 10,500 purchase ? I believe paypal would be 3.5 % He should at least drop the price as much as the fees he is saving.

In a case like this, paypal fees would actually be higher than the ebay fees. The more expensive the item, the lower the ebay fees are percentage-wise. On my calculator, I get $9,941. $253 for ebay fees and 304.80 for paypal fees. Still, $550 is worth a trip to LA. :-)

Definitely. If you notice though, the overall fee is only about 5%. Actually substantially better than Heritage 15% buyer premium. People rag on ebay over the fees, but they really are very reasonable compared to most auction houses. Nothing beats this forum though for selling! ZERO FEES!

Your right about Heritage, Teletrade, etc. I have only purchased one coin from Heritage only because I wanted it bad. I paid $690 + 15% for it. This was over 6 years ago. I have had offers of over $1000 on it but will not sell anytime soon. One of my favorite coins in my collection :-)

John - are you doing the VF20? I just found this thread...
That's a nice coin... According to Rick Snow's pricing estimates, he says a VF20 should be $9k. $10k might be a little strong, but giving the consistent appreciation of these, it will only take a year or two to catch up - and that's IF it is priced high. Then again, Rick Snow has coins for 10K he prices at 9, so...
I've been looking at that VG8, too but I think it's too strong at 5. My gut tells me it's more like a $4k-$4500 coin, but given the choice and the ability, of course go problem free. =)
