By the way, given what's happened in the stock market this week, I don't think I'd rush to sell my gold. I think we're in for more economic instability (and I'm trying to cool my nerves, business-wise) and you know what that means for gold.
It's probably not a fantastic time to buy gold, but it could be a worse time; it may not be the best time to sell gold, either.
Of course, if I actually knew what I was talking about, I wouldn't be bothering with you peons, I'd be swimming in my pool of gold with complaining about the lack of diversity in my super-model harem!

I still say do all sets in all denominations. I go to lots of coin shows and have gotten to know many dealers at them. I started asking them a long time ago how they get their coins and many said they buy Albums from people. I then asked what do you do with the empty albums after you take all the coins out. All said they just throw them away. So instead could you bring them to the next coin show for me and several said no problem. Over the years I've probably received several hundred Albums and several hundred Folders and all FREE. I give away all the Folders and keep many of the Albums. And with each new album, I start another collection. Which is why it is easy for me to say, do all of them. I do.

I saw the ICG VG-8 corroded example too. Honestly, that coin is flat out ugly...lol. I can barely tell if the date is legitimate and the coin looks as if it is about to fall apart. I can't see myself paying 3K for that, much less 5K, though I think if it were problem free it would be better than VG8.

Hi John,
I agree that ICG VG 8 is just too ugly. At most any price LOL ! The thing about the gold is , it go up it could go down, but at 1800 an Oz I am sure you would be making a profit over what you paid for it.

I saw that coin too John. I can't justify the price either. $2500-2800 sounds reasonable. You can barely make out the 6 and the eagle is ugly. I don't have a problem with problem keys as long as I can get them at a very reasonable price and, they are not this ugly. I have an 08-S IHC that's a ground find, it's just dark. I would bet this coin went into the ground as a VF-XF coin. It's just too corroded for consideration.

Glad I'm not the only one who finds it overpriced. Good to know I'm not nuts!
For the fun of it and for the learning experience:
Since everyone is looking at it, how would you net grade it? AG3? G4? I'm used to looking at pre-1800 copper with these kinds of considerations, not copper-nickel.
The reverse is actually not bad, it looks like it's had a dip but maybe one more wouldn't hurt.
ICG is reasonably reputable, no? I'd still have Snow take a look at it...

Net grading is very subjective, ANACS tried it, but it didn't really fly. I would grade it F-12 details, net FR02, as I dont think it should go for more than FR2 money.

I agree with John, so my original estimate may be a tad high. FR2 net with remaining details and severe corrosion and obviously it's been harshly cleaned as well :-X

Wow, I honestly put it somewhere between AG3 and G4. Maybe I'm giving the "Big Key" too much benefit, but that's honestly how I see it.
This is good to know!

Ryan, This is why I think PCGS just puts "Genuine". They don't want to have to think, just make a buck off us. I respect the other TPG's for at least trying to details grade ;-)

Neither of us are right or wrong, as net grading is about as subjective as it gets, and it would really come down to what the buyer is willing to pay. BTW ICG is reputable. I believe they are know owned by the same employers that used to own ANACS.

Well, he said he would accept 9750, but only cash(he doesn't want to trade for gold). So that means I would need to do a massive gold sell-off. hmmmmmmmmm I also purchased an indian head partial set for 34.00. Seemed fair, at $1 a coin and an album. There are a few of the earlier dates too, though nothing special. It gives me a starting place before I start upgrading. :-) http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...TRK:MEWNX:IT

$9750 huh?l Hard call John. If it were me, I would hold off and hold the gold. Up again big time again. Look at our admin vs. Wall st....no brainer on gold. Nice buy John on that album. That 1876 looks pretty ugly though...LOL! I have always bought single coins as opposed to albums but the rest look okay ;)

John,
You did good on the Indian set. 1900 to 1908 are worth a buck each, and you picked up some early dates that are worth more. I would not keep any decent coins in a paper album, too much sulpher will damage your copper over time.
