personally, I think you should send all the pictures you took...comparing to the auction listings, etc, to ebay and see if there's something they can do about grossly misrepresented photos. if the seller isn't reprimanded, then why should they stop the way they sell? the seller knows what he/she is doing is wrong, but unless ebay tells them otherwise, it's still okay. they need to be stopped, this is not fair to those just coming up in the hobby and runs the risk of turning off young collectors. I know a lot of us may think we don't want anymore collectors out there gobbling up our gems and hole fillers, but we were those young kids at one time or another (a longer time for some of us), and needed support not only from peers but reputable sellers to drive our love of the hobby. this seller and others like them threaten that spark that seems to be too dim as it is.

Buy on ebay is complicated , I avoid any auction with pics that seems doctored and I prefere to bid in brown coins because the shinny ones have a big chance of be cleaned ! I always make my highest bid (the maximum amount I would pay per such coin dont matter if I get outbid , I dont bid anyfoward duo seller most of the time have inumerous different accounts and try to manipulate buyers to bid higher and make the most of they )even when the item is with the starting price .
Past weekend I won 5 ebay auctions and I think the coins worth more then I paid but many times before I overpaid for coins that I ll try to sell and recover some of my lost !
If have no experience buying on ebay you should start with the cheapest coins you desire so when you start to bid on the most valuable you want , you all ready know about the ebay sharks and dont overpay as I did !

If it were not for the spots at 3:00 & 4:00 would you think that was the same coin? I wouldn't. I agree with what some of the other posters have said, does it matter if this seller is dipping/cleaning a coin versus photoshopping it? To me either of these is not right, and this seller is clearly doing something. I don't think I'd risk it with this seller, but then again I don't think I would buy a coin for more than about $30 on ebay anyway.

You just have to be careful and make darn sure there is a clear return policy in place. I have been buying on ebay for years, and in some cases, pretty substantial dollar value coins. I have some very nice coins I have purchased from ebay. There are many reputable sellers on ebay too but then again, there are plenty of scam artists and fools selling there as well. Like anything in life, there are winners and losers amongst us.

Here is the actual coin, natural lighting from my window.
Playing with your photos (the way he does) is a dishonest thing and should be avoided.
He sold you a different coin, one that doesn't actually exist. Massive photoshop editing!

Ha! I knew those pictures were altered - all those years of photoshopping my friends heads onto inappropriate bodies finally paid off!

I stumbled across how this photographic effect is achieved this morning. I was taking some pics of the 72 DDO that I picked up and for editing (cropping, resizing and color correction) I clicked on "effects" and there are maybe a dozen views of the coin. Converting the jpeg to a "sepia" version, tweaking the contrast and brightness will get you the color. Save the image and open it up in paint.net and from the effects menu, you can select "reduce noise" and get rid of all those pesky contact marks.

Think I should start a new thread so everybody can recognize teh pics and know exactly how it was done?

Thank you for the before and after photos! And I admire y'all who are able to purchase higher tagged items off of ebay with confidence. Not sure that I will ever get to that level of ebay confidence.

jedichef great idea!

vermontensium great advice

The seller might be using something like a sepia filter, or perhaps the color balance sliders in Photoshop? By whatever method, he has developed a standard process--because the coins all look the same. One way to recognize photo-editing is to try it yourself. As an example, I have taken your photo and applied the soften tool to the fields and portions of the bust. Then, using the clone tool, I have erased marks and diminished the corrosion spot at 3:00. I also meddled with color balance, spending 15 minutes in total, and it shows.

I suspect the seller uses some of the same tools, and probably has developed a "template coin", where he blends in details of a carefully doctored photo to each coin he sells--to save time.

The bottomline, the seller is a crook and scammer.

Apparently he has evolved to just using image editing software to make his coins look better than they are. He DEFINATELY has recolored coins in past because I bought one and removed the artificial color.

Thanks for everyone's input. I welcome additional comments if anyone else has comments.

I've contacted the seller today to begin the returns process. I may be writing an ebay guide with our seller nancy (she's a gal) as the star of the show.

Thanks again CCF.
