Ibought one of these bags from my dealer and opened it at the store. It contains all curculated coins in lower grades. Mine also came with a NGC slabed 1922 Peace dollar with a special binion label-not graded. There was also a plastic bag with information about the binion family and happenings of teds death. A list of what is in the canvas bag is also included, all silver. I found mostly silver quarters, dimes, and I think there was 1 walking lib half and a couple benjy's, some 64 Kennedy's,and some 40%.

SIRFORDSTER: when you figured how much you paid for the bag and then opened it and figured out melt value of the coins, were you ripped off or did you pay close to melt?

In 1975 I moved to Las Vegas. Around 1977 I became re-acquainted with "Deadlift Eddie", a power lifting friend of mine from Minneapolis who now has since passed away. No need to give Ed's last name here, as it really adds nothing to the story.
Ed was a 6-foot 3 security guard at Binions Horseshoe Casino on Fremont street in Downtown Las Vegas. With an "in with Ed" I was able to observe the final table of play in the 1978 world Series of Poker - Eddie positioned me right behind the dealer with Jimmy "the Greek" looking over my shoulder. As play continued both the Greek and I made comments to each other.
Both Jack and Ted Binion would pass-by and view the ongoing action. There were just 42 contestants back then which is nothing compared to the 6,000+ that enter nowadays. The final 3 at the table were Bobby Bawdwin, Crandell Addington, and Louis Hunsucker. Bobby Baldwin went on to win ($210,000).
Ed knew that I liked to collect coins so he described to me all the bags of Silver Dollars and bars of Silver that were stored in the basement of the Horseshoe Casino. This was Ted's Silver Hoard that was later moved to the Pahrump Valley underground vault. That was a time leading up to the March 27, 1980 run-up of silver to $50, and not only was Ted Binion putting away Silver. Many Las Vegans would go to the Coin Shops and purchase Silver every pay day.
From the link provided above it seems that Ted was more of a knowledgeable numismatist than most thought, by his cherrypicking of high-grade Silver Dollars. I think I will purchase one or two of those NGC "Binion Hoard" Silver Dollars.

I did ok when I bought the bag, and even made a little on spot prices at the time.

The hoard was already initially searched by the original buyer, and it was known for the dollars, which is why I do not understand why the bag does not have any dollars in it.

Because he hoarded silver and he separated out the dollars and put them over there and the rest of his bulk silver over here. When the hoard was marketed they made a big deal over all the silver dollars. Now that they are gone they disposing of the rest of the bulk silver in bag lots and playing on the Binion Hoard hype built up from the marketing of the dollars. The idea is to use that hype to sell bulk generic silver at better than bulk generic silver prices.
