My son and I were at an antique mall today that had many dealers selling coins. We noticed a huge variation in the prices of the proof sets. The majority of the sets were priced $3-$5, and others were $12-$15 and upwards from $30. None of them were very old and I didn't recognize any obvious differences such as silver. My son bought a 1972 set for $2.89, a 1987 for $3.99 and a 1976 for $6.49. Seeing such a difference in pricing always makes me nervous about what I'm buying. When I looked at a new 2011 set, it was $31.95...why are the ones we were looking at so inexpensive?

Thanks!

Supply and demand.

The 2011 set is pretty new still and it contains a TON of coins, if you didn't notice.

My 2009 Red Book shows the following for these Proof sets, are you sure they are Proof sets, vs Uncirculated sets?
Proof Set Iss Price/Curr Value Unc.Mint Set

1972 S Proof $5/$7
1972P/D/S Uncirculated $3.50/$9
1987 S Proof $11/$8
1987 P/D Uncirculated $7/$9
1976 S Proof $7/$12
1976 P/D $6/$10

The 87 S proof set also came out in a Prestige Set which included the Constitution dollar (Silver).
The 76 S also came out in a 3 piece silver set.

Hope this helps.

Yeah, that '87 has a cent, nickel, dime, quarter and half. A 2011 has a cent, nickel, dime, 5 quarters, a half, and 5 dollars.
