I saw this neat medal in the 20 cent bin at my local coin shop (pics to follow) and it caught my attention. I bought it and did a little research on it when I got back home.

Turns out this is a Prussian medal for Valor during the campaign against Napoleon in the Napoleonic War. The bronze for this medal was made by melting down one of the French cannons! Mine is dated 1815.

This http://www.medal-medaille.com/produ...ucts_id=7817 page gives you all of the gory details of the piece and its history.

My medal does not have the ribbon, but it is still worth about $200 Dollars!!

You were willing to do the research. Coin shop owner was not and dumped it into the junk bin. Nice find. However, I wouldn't rub it in ... maybe he's willing to "salt" his junk bin a bit to get people to look through it. Plus - if he bought it in a lot and paid, say, a nickel for it, he's just experienced a 400% profit. And everyone is happy.

That's a cool find! Comparing yours to the one you linked, the cross side is a bit different on yours (the cross ends). Perhaps these vary between dates?

Don't worry I won't tell them! I read where the cross ends can appear either curved like they are in the link above or flat, like mine. As for the dates that this occur... I have no clue. I'm so excited!

I picked up a cast Jacobite medal of James 111 (of Scotland) Pretender, under much the same circumstances. I do not collect medals, but I just HAD to investigate this one! Well worth my effort.

Now I see that--interesting! Perhaps there were two makers of these medals, because I see other differences too.

Cool find! I always overlook the discount bins, maybe I'll start giving them a second look.
