Not the coin value but in modern terms what would a shilling have been worth in England in 1823

Thanks

A single middle class male could earn something like One Hundred Pounds per year.
That translates to about 40 shillings per week.

The lower classes I guess would have something like a quarter of this amount. A maid would have free board and food, but would only have five pounds per year for her own spending money.

Over the period since then (about 190 years) inflation has averaged about 3.2% (easy to determine with a calculator with exponential function, it took me 3 reiterative steps, less than a minute to do.)

Thanks sel
I have just been able to verify Australian Convict ancestry and the rascal was sent over for stealing a "female ass" valued at 11 shillings.

That's better conversation that being an American Daughter of the Revolution or a descendant of the Mayflower
