I ordered five Uncirculated 2011 W Silver Eagles. All five either had a spot or a nick on the obverse. I didn't even bother looking at the reverses and I sent them all back. I could expect that on the bullion version, but on a collector coin I expected a little more. Apparently they receive the same handling as the bullion. I only ordered one 2011 Proof Silver Eagle and it is a really nice coin, so my hopes of receiving good quality coins were pretty high. Five out of five is a pretty bad average. I think that I'll buy one PCGS slabbed MS70 online. The 70's may be rare this year if my experience is any indication.

You have had some tough luck with getting bad products. Bigger name bullion dealers as well, and all brand new products....

The problem I have learned in the vintage collectible game, many a factory defect out there. Many dealers will send like for example star wars figures direct from company to AFA, an have them removed an graded immediately, so as they were never touched by human hands. Sure no different in the coin grading world. Just because it came from the factory does not mean it is gonna get a good grade thanks to those factory defects and common shelf or storage wear. In fact, 90 is the highest score I ever see AFA give those figures that are anywhere from 1 to 15 years old. To see an item from like 1977 to have anything higher than an 85 grade is unheard of....

Funny, I see way more MS-70 coins out there thanks to all the basement graders still living in mom an dad's basement, then I see old AFA 90 grades....

That is the reason those top four coin graders are trusted, being such sticklers when it comes to a grade....

Yeah, I couldn't believe the shape they were in. I was going to get a few of the 25th Anniversary sets in October but I'm afraid that I'd get a couple of losers with my luck. They'll probably blackball me at the mint anyhow.

Atleast you got them. Every time I order a good coin from the Mint through the Post Office, I get a call from them saying the coin never arrived or we could not get it. Mean while I can clearly see the check mark that it arrived. It's a good thing the postal worker is a collecter. Gerrr.
Rest in Peace

That, and it's a lot easier to criticise someone else's work than to make your own. Check the Norse medal thread, where it cost $55 to have his medal put in a holder with a label with "America" spelled wrong.

Now compare this to a nick on a mass produced chunk of metal that the seller is making $5 on. You get what you pay for.

I'm sure that everything has to go right for perfection. The planchets are probably handled as rough metal and it goes downhill from there. The mint is doing the best job that they can, but I learned a lesson today. If you want perfection just get it in the aftermarket and let them cull through the problems. Like you say, Fredd. You get what you pay for.

I too forgot that I had subscribed. Mine came in today and I have to say it is a splendid coin with no imperfections, though expensive.
