I just received this 1797 Large Cent today and would like some help with grading and variety. Thanks in advance for your assistance. Member ANA and EAC "You got to lose to know how to win". Dream On by Aerosmith

VG10, it even nets VG to me with the weird wormy planchet porosity.
As for attribution, '97s are pretty tough. The one thing I notice is that the last S in STATES is over the double-leaf on the right branch. That narrows it down to about half of the 20-something '97 reverses...
Looks kinda like a 142, but I wouldn't bet my life on it.

I go net VG also. At least there's no chance that it's a 1799!

VG-10 to F-12, these are known for lacking hair detail in the mid grade range.

Might be S-141. 7 distant from drapery. Knob of 9 usually weak. Double leaf positioned under S as previously mentioned. Steam ends appear to line up w/ diagnostics with A & U. Wouldn't bet Delaner's life on it either though since he's got a lot more experience with these old gals than me.

Gah, yall always find the large cent posts before me At least I dont have to look as far to help with the sheldon number I'll second the S-141 R6. Although I whipped out my penny whimsy while ryan almost knew it off the top of his head

When I first saw this coin, I figured it for a F-12.
Whatever the grade, it sure is a nice one. The early copper is going to be spendy for my type set. I won't accept anything that's been in the ground, or lower than VF. That's gonna hurt plenty.

Hambone - I most definitely did NOT know it off the top of my head! I'm sitting here pawing through Sheldon straining my eyes to get an idea!
Chance - it will hurt at first, but if you get a couple and work your way up to it, you're gonna love it! That makes the pain go away. These old coppers are wonderful, and they tell the whole American story. Hm, a VF with nice surfaces - I'd go for a '98 for the Draped Bust, a '95 for the Lib Cap, an S-11 for the Wreath and an S-3 for the Chain, were I you. =)
That won't run you much... (!)
