What's it mean when PCGS grades a coin with a plus? On another site I'm a member of, a guy is selling a MS65+ Peace dollar, and I'm unsure of the plus symbol.

I believe it to mean the coin is on the high end of MS 65.

Just another grab by a TPG for more cash. When will it stop? Used to be better than a 65 was a 66 etc. What's next, ++ to designate high end for a plus or +++ to designate high end for a ++? As I've posted b4, it's out of control and ridiculous.

Partial grades have been around since '94 according to PCGS.

Maybe internally but not on the holders, except for Accugrade and Compugrade both of which did decimal point grading. Possibly they mean that was when people started talking about "high end" and "Low end" for the grade coins.

I wouldn't put much stock in a +. If the grades really were so precise and clear cut there wouldn't be such a thing as cracking slabs to send in for regrading. I think the numismatic world would be better served with 5 or 6 MS grades instead of 11 (or 21 with the plus system!)

Wouldn't a standardized computer grading system eliminate varying human opinions?
Of course that would stop crackouts and reslabbing so less $$$$ for the TPGs. They'll never stand for that.

As evidenced by the fact that PCGS has a pretty locked-down patent on the computerized coin-grading process which they've been sitting on for nearly two decades now.

Maybe that's why the Secure Plus Scanning and digital fingerprinting. Their patent on the computer grading will expire in just a few years.

It's the first step towards implementing the system. Computerized grading won't be viable without a substantial database of comparative results; they're building the database now. Computers cost a whole lot less than world-class graders. You know they're going there if they can.

I think they ought to switch to a hieroglyphic scale for the benefit of their customers who can't read. Such a scale might look something like this...

- Genuine But No Grade.

- Odd But It's A Keeper.

- You've Got To Be Kidding Us.

- Not Impressed.

- OK.

- Hey, Neat.

- Hey, Really Neat.

- Hey, Super Duper Neat.

- Let Us Put It This Way: We Got Our Money, Get Yours!
