The story and the image of the Griffin has been around for a long time.

A Griffin has the body and claws of a Lion, king of beasts on the earth
and the head, wings and breast of an Eagle, masters of the sky.

On these two examples it was used at Abdera 400-346 BC and again by Gallenius 253-268 AD.

There were many ancient Greek coins minted with the Griffin and it appears on a few Roman coins, as the myth continued.
I'm collecting a few.

The image of the Griffin is still quite powerful and popular today.

I hope enjoy these.

Very nice coins I must say. And I like the idea of a collection of Griffin coins. I need to specialize like this. As it is, I see a coin I like and, if I can afford it, I buy it. No rhyme or reason behind it. I do have a denarius collection of the First 12 Caesars minus just one. Caligula!! I keep looking but the ones I find are out of my price range - for now anyway.

Again, I like your coins. They are beautiful. Thank you for sharing them with us.

Regards,

JW

Nice start to a Griffin collection. I like the idea of collecting a mythological animal. I have been collecting Roman and Greek coins of Pegasus. I have 12 now, most of the Greek examples are quite pricy. The roman ones are more affordable especially the later bronzes. Good luck with your collection.

@jwharper

That's good going getting a denarius from nearly all the first 12 Emperors. Both Caligula and Claudius are the difficult ones so you're half way there - congrats.

jwharper........
If you were to organize with a theme in mind, I'll bet you would find several within your fine collection.
I think Roman Standards would make a very interesting theme.

Spider5689..........
I'd love to see some of your Pegasus coins. I thought about a set like that as well.
I haven't brushed up on it lately but Pegasus is very cool. IMO

Thanks all for your remarks.

I started a small Griffin collection myself. I have some information about your Abdera coin. It used to be part of my collection before I sadly had to part with it. I still have a few Griffins myself:-

Some Greeks.

An Abdera drachm:-

Griffins

A Teos drachm:-

Griffins

And Republicans:-

L Papius Denarius Serratus

Griffins

I think that it is a great theme.

I'm sorry you had to let the little Abdera go. Although I'm very happy to have it. It's a small world.

You have some very nice griffin coins.

I've picked a few more recently, but they are a step or two down in caliber from your coins.

Indeed it is a good theme.
I need to find a reference for the abdera coins (and other Greeks)... they minted a lot of Griffins.
There seem to be a number of variations on the Abdera coin I got from your collection and the one you show above(incused square). I saw one similar today that had reference to a magistrate, I believe, but like I say I don't know yet where to find detailed info about them.

Thanks for your reply.
