I was wathcing some 5 Dollar Maple Leafs for sale on ebay, They sold for more than what I see them for sale on other sites, about $50. Adding shipping they paid about 65-70 each, Am I missing something.

Probably just the usual ebay wierdness. I sold some junk silver coins on ebay last week. I (foolishly) put no reserve on them thinking they would attract lots of bids. On the plus side, some recent junk French and German silver went for 2x+ bullion value while (sadly) some English silver went at about 1/3 bullion delivered!

I have been watching the sales of English silver coins recently and I see that they consistently sell for quite a bit less than Canadian junk silver on a silver-equivalent basis. No idea why.

still all and all it makes you wonder why anyone would pay 60- 70 dollars for a coin that is now worth 32.00 (spot price as of today)...silver would have to go up to over 75 an ounce to get your money back
Rest in Peace

It's impossible for something to sell for more than it's worth in a free market. It was obviously worth it to the high bidder.

Price water at the supermarket. 39¢ a gallon from the machine. 20¢ a pint by the case. $1 for the same pint at the snack bar. How much for a swimming pool full?

In effect, you're asking why anyone would pay more than scrap value for a car.

with coins, much like other collectibles, "value" has multiple meanings. face value, intrinsic value, and market value. and when insurance companies get involved, replacement value. chances are, none of the "values" will ever be equal at the same time.
