I am going to be purchasing 1921 and 1921-D halfs in the next few months... (hopefully at least). I have been watching a lot of them on ebay lately, getting an idea for ebay prices, and trying to increase my knowledge. I came across this coin a few minutes ago. Is this coin a real 1921? My concern is that the second 1 in the date looks too wide at the top. Thoughts?

I think it's suspicious that the main picture is the reverse, not the obverse.

You think it was a 27-S with the 7 retooled to a 1 and the S removed?

I'd ask him to send you hi-res pictures.

Also note that 98.9% is very low fb for someone with so many sales. If 263 left negs, how many had a bad experience? 10x? 50x?

I think it may be a 1927-S that has been tampered with. That was my first thought. Here is a link to a pcgs certified 1921 half. Note how the 1 remains narrow at the top in this one.

I am not going to bid on the coin that I posted the link to. Doesn't look like that great a seller to me, and I don't trust the coin. I will ask him for high-res pictures though, and if I get them I will post them here.

I agree, there is a definite difference in 1's between the two coins. The 1927-S tampering theory would have to be done pretty professionally though. By just glancing at some of the 1927-S's, the 7 does not seem close enough or vertical enough to be easily transformed into a 1. Not sure though...

Could the coin in question have taken a hit on top of the 1?

I understand that you are not interested in the coin. I think this coin would need further inspection , it does look suspicious. It may be geniune, but like you I would not be interested, there will always will be more.

Just wanted to send a quick update. I did email the seller about better resolution/closer up pics, but he never emailed me back.....

Oh well, I would really have liked to have seen the coin up close. I am glad that others also found the coin questionable, so I'm not completely crazy!!

I may be naive, but is 262 negative feedbacks significant considering the seller has 24,000 transactions in 8 years?
