Hi all, I just joined today after reading and lurking for a long time. I am trying to perfect my grading skills so that I can accurately describe and value my collection. I primarily buy groups of coins and sell some of them to fund my collection. I have been using the ANA Grading book but with black and white pictures it isn't too easy for me. This 1899 Barber quarter was in a group of 90% that I purchased and I thought it was worth setting to the side . It isn't a huge score but one that was unexpected. Based on my limited grading skills, I estimate a strong Fine-12 to a lower Very Fine-20, or am I mistaken? The detracting rim ding does go all the way through to rim. Does the rim ding cause the overall grade to fall or would it be a net grade? Thank you all for your help, Vinnie

That was strange, all my pics came up at the last one even though they are saved with different names, am I messing something up?

I used the CCF resizing tool and then saved the photos to iPhoto on my MacBook. They are all being saved as result.jpg when I resize them and then I rename them in iPhoto but for some reason, that didnt help and the same photo shows up as an attachment.
Has anyone else had this problem or could help?
If I am cluttering up the grading forum, a moderator is welcome to move this to the appropriate forum and to also delete my duplicate photos - I apologize for causing the extra work.

I can only see the obverse of your quarter but usually you can grade Barbers with just the obverse. For Fine-12 you need to see all letters of LIBERTY but they don't have to be complete. Your coin has all the letters plus both edges of the headband are pretty well defined. That puts it in VF territory. VF-20 or VF-25 seems about right. The rim cut is pretty noticeable and would hurt the value. I think a grading service would put this in a problem holder, labeled as "rim damage". Of course a mid-grade common date like this is probably not worth investing a grading fee. Nevertheless, it's better than a junk silver piece so if you paid generic 90% price you did well.

Hi Jaobler and JangoFett, Thank you for your replies. I am having some photo posting difficulties and am working on getting them fixed with help from the forum. I was under the impression that it was a good candidate for a VF example but was unsure if the rim ding would knock it down to a Fine. It was mixed in with a group of Barber dimes, quarters, and halves that I picked up when silver was a bit higher at 34x. I also found some better date dimes mixed in, including an 1894, 1901-S, 1902-S and a possible 1893/2. Once my photo issue is worked out, I will post pictures of them as well :) Vinnie

I think my photo issue might be fixed (or so I hope....) If all goes well, the reverse will show up and both sides of the quarter will be posted!

That's a beaut, Vinnie! Welcome!
The rim ding doesn't really bother me, it looks so nice otherwise. =)

VF-30 details IMO, I think it may have some mild environmental damage thats actually hiding some of the detail.

Hi Delaner, Thank you for the kind words. It is still a common date but for some reason I love it! Would it be acceptable to add the better date Barber dime photos that I mentioned above or should I start a new thread for them?

Wow, I didn't think a VF-30 was possible but I wont complain :).
I am not one for cleaning coins but I do have a bottle of Blue Ribbon, would a light coating with a q-tip help or should I just leave it as-is?
Best,
Vinnie

I wouldn't touch it, personally - I love it the way it is. =)
And Vinnie - probably best to start a new thread, nothing wrong with that.

Looks like VF-25/30 to me with a rim cut.

Delaner, I'll just leave it as is and will post the dimes in a new thread soon.
Double Eagle, thank you for input, it is greatly appreciated.
All the best,
Vinnie

Anyone ever notice how hard is it to find good condition barbers? capped bust coins are easier to find I swear...
