It took me awhile to figure out how to use "layers" to create a transparency, but I managed to break the code this morning. The overlay was prepared from an image of the Snow-1 overdate. It's been superimposed on a coin I bought off ebay for $2.60

There is evidence of the Cud at 9 o'clock on the coin I bought and the date lines up favorably.

It's not here yet ... but, when it does get here, what is acceptable for getting rid of the crud around the legends and devices?

I talked to Rick Snow a bit ago, and he took a look at the scan and said "yes ... it appears to be, but I'd like to see it "in hand" ...so, when it gets to Pa, it's leaving for Tucson.

I cropped the picture and added an arrow and some text pointing to the Cud.

Well...that's interesting!
Honestly, thought your coin and the Snow-1 had slightly different date positions. Now I'm intrigued; I'll look closer when I get home.

In the other thread ..... there are 2 seperate coins, and maybe that had you confused. The date on the first one (the one with the big die break) doesn't line up, but this one does line up. The "smoking gun" is the Cud. That's why I put the time into figuring out how to superimpose the verified coin's date over this one.

The Cud is a marker, but there a few others...especially the tail of the 7 under the 8.
Maybe I can find this coin without the overlay on the other thread? I'll take another look this evening.

There's too much dirt ... and the picture's not good enought to pick that up, but here's the picture of the obverse without the overlay.

The right side of the lobes of that last 8 being a bit wider is another thing to look for.
