Hey folks,
Found an interesting counterfeit that I believe is contemporary. It's copper, but I assume it was once silver washed or plated.

The odd thing is that the size and weight are about correct, it weighs between 6.5 and 6.6 grams.

Thoughts?

Very interesting. It appears to be:

Obverse : Laureate, armored and draped bust, facing right; "CAROLUS·III·DEI·GRATIA"; 1777 below, between dots.

Reverse : Crowned Arms between pillars; "HISPAN·ET IND·REX·"; ·LMAE (monogram)· ·2 R· at left and ·M·J· above left.

I also think that this might have been a contemporary counterfeit coin, originally washed with silver. Maybe one of our experts will come by with some more information!

Numismat Definitely contemporary and of significant interest. I am away from home until later this evening but I will check my files and let you know.

Thanks guys. Every time I come across something like this it's with mixed feelings. On the one hand, it's unusual and interesting, but on the other I know I cannot legally sell it... even if it's worth a lot.
Good thing I can hand them off to someone like Swamperbob knowing that any knowledge gained from the coin will be shared with the community.

The coin is the Anton-Kleese 77C-L11 - known only in that one mating. The known exemplars are all struck copper with a weight range of 6.5 to 6.7 grams. This places your copy within the known range. The dies are typically crude as seen on most locally produced copies. This one appears to have been cleaned but that is not as great a problem for counterfeits.

It is a variety I do not own and I would be interested in obtaining the coin.

It's yours. I should still have your mailing address on file, it will go out first thing Monday.
Thanks again for your help figuring it out. =)
