Okay, I purchased a 1870 FB. Problem is that Charlton does not ref this designation. I have also seen it on TCNC Auctions website.

According to Charlton the coin is an F1W. Not sure about the 1/1 yet, as I have not broken out the mag yet.

Can someone please educate this newbie as to what the FB means?

Thanks!

FB stands for flat border, and is denoted by 'W' in my 2011 Charlton book. If you go to page 83, there is a diagram which shows the difference between the wide flat rims (W) and narrow raised rim. For the FB variety, the denticles extend closer than normal to the centre of the coin. If you're not sure what I'm talking about, go to ebay, and look at some pictures of various 1870 fishcales that people have listed.... I hope this helps.

Thank you kitka! The coin is a W for sure. I appreciate the clarification.
