These have definitely been excavated. They're still pretty decent for having been in the ground, especially the 1835. I've dug a few around here, and they are nowhere near that well preserved.
I'll get with you, BadThad ... I have an 1874 Indian head that's got something caked or growing on it....and it needs help. I have very little invested in it, so it's a "nothing from nothing" situation.
I'd just let them soak in distilled water for a while first. Not only the safest but the cheapest method that may or may not work. Absolutely do not use SOAP of any kind. Almost no one on Earth really knows what is in just SOAP and sometimes that means the people that make it too. Dishsoaps have a tendency to turn coins bluish. If Distilled water and/or Acetone does nothing, I suggest leaving them alone.
