The more I look at small date vs large date, the more similar they look to me....I'm calling upon you experts to end my headache and tell me which one this is.

SD, although this particular one has me doubting myself too. Maybe it's the way it's pictured, the lighting makes the end of the six look longer

That a large date! I don't think we're going to be much help this time.

Thanks for the thoughts.

What exactly makes the difference between a small and a large date on these?

The upper part of the 6 on a SD doesn't stretch far enough to make a straight line up and down to the outside of the loop. The top of the 9 on a SD is level with the top of the 1, while in the LD it goes slightly higher.

A couple other points - the large date has a very round 0, while the small date is more of a vertical ellipse. Also, the large date 1 is tapered, and very rectangular on the small date. Side by side they're more obvious (there is an overall size difference).

Upon further inspection and after reading the other posts, I think I was wrong the first time, I think it is a large date. Still not sure though. Whilst I agree with the points made by previous posters, the 6 just looks really short for a large date. Must be the picture.

It is definitely a large date. I have been working with the small dates extensively for the last 4 or 5 months, trying to figure what the mint did and why the changed from the small date to the large date in that year. There is much more to tis stroy than meets the eye.
