I recently snagged a 1857 Flying Eagle cent off of the Bay (have not received it yet, and will post images), and the seller sent some background on it. (S)He stated that it used to be in an ANACS slab as XF-40, but he prefers PCGS & NGC, and cracked it out and submitted to NGC and it came back as a VF-30, and that he took a hit on the loss.

Question: Has anyone submitted a crossover from one TPG to another in hopes of getting a higher grade and got burned?

I have heard that PCGS and NGC are a little tougher than ANACS, but it could have been a bad day (on the crossover) for the grader.

To eliminate the crossover gamble you can specify a minimum grade. You'll still pay the fee if it doesn't cross but you'll retain the coin in its original holder.

We continually preach to buy the coin and not the holder for this reason and many others. TPG graders are human ... they have good days and bad. Then there is the "corporate influence". High volume customers tend to get the benefit of the doubt on a grade. Of course the TPG's deny this conflict of interest, but I've seen the results.

Next you need to know what generation holder you are looking at. ANACs was a bit liberal in their blue holders and have tightened up the grades in the new yellow holders.

Finally, both NGC and PCGS can be a bit arrogant of their standing in the TPG arena. Submit a blue-holdered ANACs coin for cross-over and it can be DOA even if the coin is accurately graded.

What the seller described was not a crossover, it was a simple submission. Once they cracked it out, it was as if the original grading never existed and it was simply a raw coin.

On a crossover where you send the coin in in the other companies holder they will not crack the holder open if it would mean a reduction in grade unless the submitter specifies a "cross at any grade" instruction.

If you attempt a crossover at PCGS or NGC I believe you cannot specify a minimum grade higher than the existing grade on the slab. You can specify any minimum grade equal to or less than the current slab grade. If you are looking for an upgrade you have to crack out the coin and submit it raw.

One example I can recall where I did OK was crossing an ICG-slabbed bust dollar which was graded VF-35. I expected PCGS would be harsh on an ICG coin and I really wanted it in a PCGS holder. I specified a minimum acceptable grade of VF-20. Somewhat to my surprise they did cross it at the same original VF-35 grade.

You are correct I checked both PCGS and NGC and they don't allow you to request a minimum grade higher than that on the submitted slab. NGC only accepts PCGS slabs for crossover, but PCGS still does crossover for any other services slabs.
