The seller says what looks like places where the medal is flaking off it's plating is really toning and the medal really is 925 sterling silver. (Does it say 925S?) I have no doubt that the medal is marked that way...but the medal does look to be "flaking" off some sort of plating, not "toning."

Opinions?

From the pictures I agree, looks like plating coming off....Natural toning would certainly cover more of the coin..

I agree, my question is, this is a nearly 10 oz medal that regularly sells for 3-400 dollar (according to spot price) if it is indeed plated, wouldn't it have a bad rep for NOT really being a big hunk of silver? (Search 1974 Iceland medal and you'll find other examples)

I was able to find references to 925 stainless steel products. Such as this example for jewelry;

"fashion agate silver bracelet, rhodium plated, 925 silver/brass/stainless steel/alloy jewelry".

From the appearance of your piece, I would be skeptical of much silver content. Still an interesting item - Gordon

I have seen these go for $300 on a regular basis, right at its melt value. Based on these photos, I'd be real hesitant to bite on any of those!
