I was looking through Half Cent listings on ebay and came across a listing for a pretty rough looking 1805 draped bust I was curious about:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1805-Draped...em4aaf0f707a

He claims it is small 5 with stems. I can see the stems but I can barely make out that the last digit is a 5, much less the small variety. I'm wondering if it is just wishful thinking on his part.

Can anyone make out what type of 5 that is, and if so could you explain how you could tell? I'm looking at the Red Book images and it doesn't help me here.

Thanks!

The attribution appears to be correct. There are three obverses in 1805. C-1 and C-4 have the LIBERTY right down against the hair. On the two small 5 varieties LIBERTY is well away from the hair. On this piece LIBERTY matches the small 5 obverses. Both of the small 5 varieties have stems. On the rare one, C-2, the berry to the right of the F in HALF is roughly at the center of the letter. On the C-3 it is above the F.

It is tough to see if that date is 1805.

I wish I could help by posting a comparison coin but my 1805 Half Cent is a Medium 5/Stemless.

An 1805 Half Cent with a small 5 and stems (above AG3) is an expensive coin!

Thanks so much for the opinions. I've got a good handle on basic numismatics but I'm trying to move on to more advanced subjects such as this.

Since the bidding was only $20 I took a stab at it and bid it up to $51, but someone grabbed it at $53. It was a little too trashed for my taste, but I had thoughts of getting it cheap, sending it to ANACS for authentication and trying to resell it. 50 bucks was as high as I was willing to risk given the costs involved in getting it slabbed.

I am not convinced it is 1805 either. It looks like it could be 1806. But this coin is too bad to take a chance on. In my opinion, it is not worth the gamble.
