I have several 1/4 anna's from India, and was wondering how I could see where they were minted. So I saw in the catalogue the following:

B -- Mumbai (Bombay), 1835-1947, (dot on coin)
C or CM -- Calcutta, 1835-1947, ( no mint mark on coin)

So I suppose the smaller dots in the circle mean it is minted in Mumbai? If so, doesn't it make this coin Much more rare. As the mintage is for calcutta 21,107,000 and for Mumbai 1,446,000

I have several of them, so here is one without those exact dots in the circle... so I'm guessing this is Calcutta Mint?:

To me, the quarter anna is a strange coin. It was a workhorse coin in the time of British India.

Therefore, I find it difficult to explain why I have over a dozen quarter annas, with dates ranging over 80 years, all in red uncirculated condition, and all obtained for less than two dollars each.

I have a few uncirculated British India silver coins as well, over the same period. The condition of these I can understand. They must have been hoarded.

But why hoard the bronze coins?

Your 1941 (George VI) is #531. It is Calcutta as the mint mark (the dot for Mumbai) would appear below the date between the second and third number.
The dots at the side of the words 'ONE', 'ANNA', 'INDIA' and date started with #530. The difference between #530 and #531 is that the #530 has an extra dot above the letter 'N' at 12 o'clock.
The 1/4 Annas issued before 1938 did not have the dots beside the letterings.
