Has anyone bought from them? If so, good experience? If you send them a check for a 1oz gold bar the shipping is $15.99...if you use credit card its $80? What the heck? Edited by lagwagon211 09/28/2011 11:44 pm

I find it very very interesting the prices on this website reflect current spot prices (with a modest premium) on all precious metals. The only caveat on checkout is their credit card shipping. Other methods such as check or money order is $16 dollars 7-10 days shipped. Nice find.

If you pay by credit card, they make you responsible for the card transaction fees. That is quite typical on small spread bullion sales, APMEX and many other bullion dealers charge that way as well for CCs.

APMEX is expensive but they are also reliable. I haven't dealt with gold.mart but am tempted to give them a try. I will scope out their web site and see what that looks like. Another good idea is to do a Google search for a web site and the word "scam". I did that for APMEX and found nothing. I did it for some of those gold companies that advertise on TV (not that I wanted to buy, just checking my test) and got TONS of hits.

Gainesville delivered a superbly SCRATCHED 5 oz ATB bullion coin and REFUSES to replace or refund. They said that is the way it was received from the mint. Yeah...right.

Quote:Gainesville delivered a superbly SCRATCHED 5 oz ATB bullion coin and REFUSES to replace or refund. That would be enough for me to never ever buy from them again and also to point out what happened to tens of thousands of people via the Internet. If a dealer does not stand behind what they sell, don't do any more business with them... ever. Do not recommend them to friends, family, or associates. Sooner or later, they WILL get the message and it WILL be expensive for them; MUCH more expensive, in fact, than simply replacing a defective product with a good one would have been. A good dealer wants their customers to be happy. In fact, many of them will go out of their way to ensure that their customers are satisfied with the products they sell to them. This ensures that the customer returns again and again and also recommends the dealer to others. This can result in lots of good business for the dealer, as it should. The dealer earns that with good products, good service, and reasonable prices. It is an old business axiom that it is 10 times easier to keep an old customer than it is to find a new one. Sounds as if Gainesville hasn't heard that one. :-/

To answer the original question, I bought two coins from Goldmart (a $20 Gold Liberty Head Double Eagle (AU or Higher) and a 2011 1 oz Australian Platinum Platypus) from them at the beginning of October after PMs had dropped sharply. The total amount was too little to pay by bank wire (they only accept bank wire for amounts over $5,000) and I didn't want to pay the extra fee for CC use, so I payed by credit card. It took a LOOOOONG time for the check to finally clear and for them to send me the coins -- nearly three weeks. However, I did finally get them and I was very satisfied with the coins and the shipping. Plus, the value of the coins rose significantly while I was waiting for them, so that helped ease the pain of waiting... The premiums on the coins was significantly less than other sites such as APMEX. In fact, my only real complaint was lack of variety. I wanted to buy a complete set of historical U.S. gold coins in AU or better condition, and the only one they had available was the $20 Gold Liberty Head Double Eagle (I ended up buying the rest at APMEX for much higher premiums). If I were strictly buying bullion, however, I would use Goldmart again in a heartbeat. I'd probably make sure I ordered more than $5000 at a time, though, so that I could pay by bank wire.

I skimmed through this website: http://golddealerreviews.com/ and didn't see any review for Goldmart.com. On the other hand, Gainsville Coins and see 8 positive vs 9 negative reviews.

If you buy certain items from SilverTowne, OTOH, then you do not pay a separate CC surcharge. The trick is, does ST have what you want when you want it? If they do, then they are a viable alternative vendor.
