I'm putting together a choice circulated collection of 3CN and I'm really enjoying the series.

I purchased the following coin (don't have it in hand yet) and I'm thinking the green color might be PVC damage, WDYT?

The coin looks awesome, but I'm bummed about the potential damage. I have acetone and I'm not afraid to use it. Advice?

It looks like PVC to me also. I would go ahead with the acetone.

Actually, I think the coin is quite saveable. I agree with the acetone bath. Just rinse in distilled water afterwards.

It's great to see another fellow member go down the 3CN path!

I disagree about using water. Rinse in fresh acetone once all the contamination is gone. The reason for using acetone is that it evaporates completely and leaves nothing behind. Water can remain in any microscopic irregularities. Keep moisture away!

I do not see any pitting that would indicate long-term contamination so the surfaces will probably look pretty good after an acetone bath. If a soaking does not remove all of the PVC residue, it might require a bit of delicate q-tip work. Gently roll(not rub) a cotton q-tip across the affected areas and remember to always keep the q-tip and coin wet with acetone, frequently changing q-tips as needed.

Coin came today, it was definitely green. I was in a rush, so I did a quickie job. In 15 minutes of soaking and 30 seconds of dabbing and rolling (thanks for the tip, Bio!), it was almost completely removed. I'll do a better job later. Super coin...I'm pumped.

since we are on the subject of cleaning, can anyone tell me what would the result be if an acetone cleaned coin was sent in to be slabbed? Would it most likely get bodybagged or details graded?

I don't know if they'd be able to detect that the coin had been acetone dipped, unless you wiped it and created hairlines. Acetone doesn't do anything to the metal or any of the oxidation on the metal. All it does is remove grease, goo and organic matter. It doesn't alter the coin.

Conserving a coin with acetone will not affect TPG grading at all. TPGs will definitely not slab a coin with active PVC residue though, you will still get a bodybag for that.

thank you for the info.....I have seen a decent amt of coins in the past that were high grade but really dirty so I passed on them. I think I will pick up soem of the stuff I found with my detector and experiment with it to see what they look like once I'm done cleaning them.

Agree 100% with bio.

Is the coin really that flat? I see no luster at all.

mdh, can we agree that there is a huge difference between "dirty" and PVC or verdigris? I wouldn't clean a dirty coin.

Thad, I'll try to get pics this weekend.

Pictures added

I see that under the microscope I need to take another pass.

Thad, not nearly as flat as the seller's scans suggest.
