Hello Forums,
This is my first post, which I think is quite obvious ...

Anyways, after stumbling upon this site for quite some time now, I've decided to become a member!

I've been collecting coins ever since I can remember, and doing so on a budget! I've recently come across an issue though...

So far, 3 of the (unsure how many banks, guessing 7) around here, will not let me order boxes of coins without making me pay fee's. OUTRAGEOUS fee's at that! For ordering pennies, one bank wanted an extra 6 cents per roll! Another bank wanted 10% of the total amount ordered... For now I'm stuck as a bottom feeder purchasing 2 bags of loose coins from one bank, and 2 from another weekly.

Any help with bank names that don't charge fee's for ordering change would be greatly appreciated!

Extra info: 2 of the banks, were Bremer, and Wells Fargo.

Thanks in advance guys

First time that I have heard of any financial institutions charging for for boxes/bags of coinage. This may be part of the Banking recovery process that is fixing to start charging Debit Card monthly fees starting next year.

Thanks :D - and OUCH! I hope not, otherwise it'll be back to playing with paper instead of plastic for me... Yeah I'm not sure why they'd charge me, but it really bothers the heck out of me. I've got the funds to order a fairly large amount of coins, I've now got accounts at 3 banks, which will all be dump banks now... I've got the machinery to sort the coins.. I'm just stuck in a jam, and contemplating moving if necessary just so I can sort some coins!

First welcome to the board. Keep in mind that it costs them money to order the boxes, check them in when they arrive, and retrieve them from the vault when you come to pick them up. With the amount of people that are doing coin collecting and coin roll hunting, it doesn't surprise me that banks would want to put a stop to this. One option is to open some sort of business account, and then they likely won't charge you. Otherwise try to develop a good relationship with the head teller. Both worked for me. :)

That is one thing I am in the process of doing, as far as building a relationship with the head teller. A person might think, that after having a bank account for 20+ years would help, but apparently not. I never bring in loose coins to this same bank in particular either. I hear of people getting boxes of coins free of charge elsewhere, and refuse to lose more money (foreign coins, washers, etc, often found) on the fee's. I went as far as saying that I will take their pennies and nickles weekly free of charge, since it costs them money to ship them as well. I could see a small fee, I'd possibly be willing to choke that down, but paying 10-12% for $1000-$9000 ( Fee's = @10% $100-$900, @20% $120-$1080) worth of coin? I don't think so.

Welcome. I finally found a bank that will oder boxes for me but I have to open an account and ensured that I have enough to cover the order first. That sounded like a reasonable policy to me. They will take the loose change back as well since they just dump it into a coin counter that bags the change for return to the mint.

I threw in an extra one for those that didn't.
As to banks that do anything helpful to coin collectors. Not really to good around me. Lately I'd have a better chance and more luck robbing one than asking for coins of any kind.

All the branches of wells fargo I use to get boxes have never charged me. They'll even special order half dollar boxes for me. I wonder if it's a regional thing? I'm in S Cal. I have a wells fargo account that doesn't have a ton of money it. How many boxes are you trying t get at one time? That might be a factor. I usually only get 1 or 2 at a time, and only 1 denomination at a time per each bank. (i.e. 1 box cents, 1 box nickels)

I get a box of cents and nickels each week from Wells Fargo. I return my coins to BBVA Compass. They give me heavy plastic bags; I include a deposit slip and dont have to roll the coins. Not sure who there servicer is, but they pick up once a week (wednesdays). My deposit ususlly shows up about 5 days later.

jprine, same here. the heavy duty cointainer bags. fill in the amount and off it goes. wells fargo is the one who first recommended the bags to me. now, I usually deposit twice a week, and pick up more bags at least once a week. I pick up boxes from up to 3 different branches during the week, never more than 1 box of cents and 1 box of nickels at a time. they don't even bat an eye. the only time it's ever an issue is if it's the smaller branch and they don't have a box to spare. I usually just take whatever they can offer. (this usually only happens on saturday)

MCF, are these banks you have accounts with? Make sure you do. If they're still charging you, find another bank.

Thanks for all of the input guys! I've been driving truck for a farmer throughout the night, so finding time to get back online can be tricky. I think I may be able to get up to 4 boxes from Wells a week, after talking with the head teller on the phone for awhile. I think what I will most likely have to do is have several accounts, and get the max amount of boxes and bags from each bank as possible. I'm mostly after wheats and coppers, but also seperate canadian coppers and canadian non-coppers. The toughest part is having enough pennies to make it worthwhile. Earlier in the summer, I ordered $500 in pennies and 1k in nickels from my regular bank, they failed to tell me about fee's until after I had the boxes. They said "Next time the bank will have to charge you a fee as it costs us money to order." Well, that seemed logical n' all enough to me, but I was still quite a bit bummed out. Ever since then I've been searching banks within a 200 mile radius in hopes of finding one that will order a massive load for me. If all else fails, I suppose I could set up a Tuesday route, since all banks ship out loose change and excess change on Wedsnday mornings.

Any input is always appreciated guys :-) I'm starting to think it may be a regional thing. I'm certain I could get more boxes n' such from a bank in the cities, I just don't want to run the risk of getting mugged...

I've been roll hunting for years. Some banks will order boxes for you even without an account. Some banks are under contract and it does not cost them xtra to order.
I have several accounts and so far none have charged me to order.
Another unwritten rule of crh'ing is, do not dump where you eat.
Good luck.

Oops, nearly forgot to mention that I do have accounts with all of these banks. I've now become accustomed to having a list of questions I ask before I open an account. I do recall, and my fiance can vouge for me that a Wells manager told me there wouldn't be any fee's if I were to order coins from there. I also gave him figures as he asked how much n' all. Even at 9k in halves he said it wouldn't be a problem. I'm not sure if he wasn't taking me seriously because I'm 22 living in a medium sized town, but it's no joke when I come to order change :P

I also dump at only Bremer, which I recently set up the account in hopes of ordering change, but found out their policy, so that's strictly a once a month dump bank.

I think I may have finally found a way to get the slip on fee's... My fiance's dad mentioned that an armoured car company was hiring drivers. Needless to say, if it means the possibility of ordering boxes for free I'm in... The pay and benefits would just be a bonus then :)
