Why would a 1990 1/2 oz gold eagle have bids on ebay for $1600+? Is there that much of a premium for that mint year? Just don't understand why someone would buy a bullion coin at twice melt.

Either your missing something, or the bidders are.

Most likely just another ebay happening. Happens all the time!

Numismedia lists 1990 @$1890 and 1991 @$2550 in MS67, presumably due to low mintages of 31,000 and 24,100 respectively.

They are key dates.but you know what, I'd rather buy several common dates.

I also felt why buy keys when you could buy more commons. But I've switched to trying to get the best keys instead. After I kept hearing the same advice, it stuck. "Buy the best Key Dates you can afford" "Or save your money to you can" I've always been attracted to the sought after pcs, just not the price tags. So that's the hardest part, I miss the amount of coins that would normally come in. But now when I do purchase it seems more of an accomplishment. Don't get me wrong I still buy common pcs as well, I think I'm just trying to discipline myself more these days.

Additionally:

Numismedia lists 1990 @$1930 and 1991 @$2610 in MS69.
There are very few listed for sale on ebay...So if you collect 1/2 oz.Gold Eagles that are NGC graded and want a complete set it is the price to pay.
Note the small premium for the MS-69 over the MS-68

Murty, I hope you took no offense to my posting. I was simply trying to understand the valuation of bullion grade gold coins better

unholyroller,
No offense taken,I hope it didn't seem that I was upset.I was not in the least upset. I posted the additional info on the 1/2 eagle.I thought it would be honest that I should disclose to the community that I was the one who sold the coin.
