Its graded by PCGS as AU55. What I see as wear could actually be a light strike. What is your opinion? Thank you.

Quick opinion is, I think PCGS might have been a little stingy but it's circulated. I see what looks like rub on the knees and, um, other areas.

Very nice coin. I agree with Super Dave that perhaps it would grade better than PCGS AU55. Maybe MS-60 would be more precise. I also think a light strike is very possible.

I'm surprised, I really thought PCGS might have over graded it.

I think its close to what Dave and Rick are saying with Au-55 or above not to exceed MS-60. I say MS-58 at the highest withe 55 being closest. And I do see rub on both arms, 1 leg and Um on other areas as Dave put it. What a Gentalman and yet we now what he means... LOL Nice coin shatsi I wouldbe proud to own it. Also the reverse is wonderful the obverse shows alot of surface scratches also great photo.

I didn't buy it yet, still contemplating. Its on ebay at $170 and the same seller also has another seated qtr, so I'm trying to decide between the two. Only thing holding me back from this coin is the scratches on obverse. Thank you for the opinion.

He has 100% feedback. They also have a picture of it in the PCGS slab.

This about it this way, you own a Carson City minted coin. That's history. The dealer seem legit, prices are higher than gray sheet. I emailed the seller regarding the 1854 and he highly recommends it and if I'm not happy for any reason he'll even pay s/h for me to send it back.

What do you think is in the '888'?

I dunno, shatsi. The 1888-s is the rarer, but the die cracks would make the difference to me in favor of the 1854. The differing lighting interferes, but I think the 1854 is also the technically superior coin.

Given the choice of the 2 coins,, I would choose the 54,, But that is a choice made on a personal preference for coins which have die cracks.
I believe that the luster is also superior ,, with a very similar grade as the 88 .
