Yes, the 1854 is graded AU55 too by PCGS. I'm tempted to buy both but $$$$

I would have to say that the 1854 is a much better coin , Maybe not rariety , But the service looks better and the die crack is nice, the strike is also better with alot less rub, and the fileds show less scratches. This one is a definate slider Atleast Au-58 But not quite MS-60 , also I think Breen does list a variety for the year

I stick with my original opinion on the 54 ,, Its a nice coin with original luster ,,
I however dont like the looks of the 88 even in PCGS's slab the coin looks to have altered surfaces .

 I see hairlines all on the 88-s that would appear to indicate it has been cleaned. Plus it just seems to me the 88-S should have more luster than it does to be that untoned. Who knows though PCGS slabbed it so I guess they saw something we can't see. I really like the 54 though. Especially the obverse die cracks. |

In hand it has good luster. Could it be something wrong with my picture? When I compare them in hand I seem to be more attracted to the 1888. It has some dark toning in the area of the date and in the area of 'STATES OF' in the reverse.

Are you sure that it is luster and not shine ? The coin is photoing like a proof with dark fields and highlighted details. you may have to experiment with different lighting to get an acccurate pic of the coin. Rick |

Looking at the two I really like the 1854. Both are beauties but the 1854 has great eye appeal.

Since the question is on the obverse I'm only posting pics of the obverse.   I'm going to keep the 1854 for sure but I'm trying to decide whether to send back the 1888. |

only you can decide if your going to keep the coin or not,, But something has gone on with the coin, If its not cleaning ? I do not know what it is .
PCGS has a warranty according to their website,, I guess if you do keep it you could always have the coin reviewed.
Good luck with your decision !!
wait for other opinions if you have the time !! There are some pretty sharp folks who frequent this forum !!
