I have a worn, common date Walking Liberty half that also got a yellow toning like that. I used some acetone and a gently rubbed with a Q-tip and it came right off. Let me be clear, it was a low grade, common date, I'd never do that to a higher grade coin or a key date.

Yeah, someone wrappedvthe coin with packing tape to "protect" it. I'll play with acetone tomorrow.

I dunno. Packing tape does make a great conservation system but, for my money, I'd pick lucite!

Finally got some time to play with the coins. Boy what a mess. Here's a pic of the coin on my garage workbench, still covered with tape. Here's with the tape removed. All that yellow stuff is tape residue I took a pic of the tape residue. I dipped it in acetone for a minute or so. The glue residue started coming right off. I needed to dab at it a bit with a cotton swab, but managed to clean it pretty well. I'll argue without damaging the coin, too. But, the coin clearly had been scrubbed prior: Perhaps a better pic So, what have I learned? - That acetone removes packing tape residue from coins pretty well. - But a coin that had been protected packing tape, probably was wiped before hand.

Ummm, please take me back to the beginning of this coin-tale ...
=> I'm a bit curious who put that nasty tape-covered coin into your safety deposit box? ... I never find random "surprises" in my safety deposit box (your safety deposit box doesn't sound that safe, but I'd keep checking it from time to time to see what else shows up?) ...

Quote: => I'm a bit curious who put that nasty tape-covered coin into your safety deposit box? Now that is interesting. Everyone is thinking how to get the tape off and no one else was wondering just how did that coin get there? Who put the tape on that thing anyway? And Why? What we have here is a Safe Deposit Box Mystery.

The safety dep box stores our "stuff.". Sometimes the "stuff" is a gift from Mom, Grandma, etc
I prob should, but I don't have an inventory of what's in there.
Who knows about the tape?
