Is the National Numismatics collection on display at all times? I saw on the NMAH site that they have a display "Stories of Money" which has coins from the main collection, but I cant see where the actual collection is.

Thanks

I remember seeing it but that was back in the 70's. The 1849 double eagle stood out for me with a mintage of one.

No, they took down the main exhibit years ago and have only had a couple small exhibits with a handful of rare coins since then. (Typically about 25 to 50 coins) Even back then you never saw more than a tiny fraction of the collection (Mostly just the Lilly gold collection) which numbers over 1.5 million items.

I went to DC this summer and saw that exhibit as well. Stories of Money. I saw nothing else as far as money or currency exhibits. Not gonna lie, I was drooling at all those MS key dates and gold coins

Seems a shame to have that kind of collection and not have it on display, but I guess theres only "X" number of collectors that would want to see the whole thing. I'm guessing that a million coins is about 999,900 more then the average museam visitor would be interested in.

Has amyone ever visited the American Numismatic Society collection in NYC? Is it worth seeing? I am only 2 hrs away from NYC so maybe I will take a day trip with my better half.

From what I understand viewing coins at the ANS is by appointment only, You will have to contact them ahead of time and specify what you are interested in seeing. It may also be difficult unless you are a member and/or a recognized researcher.
