Well... Got the email from ANACS that my coins are on the way home. This coin was returned in a body bag by NGC for "Unreadable Date"; however ANACS had their way with it. I'm soliciting your thoughts/grade on this one and will provide the answer tomorrow.... Let the grading begin!

Clearly it is a 1923 s but that can only be decided knowing there were no other dates ending in a 3, NGC dropped the ball on this I think. F 12 in my opinion.

F-15 details cleaned, may get a VG-10 or F-12 grade because of the weak date.

With the exception of the worn date,
I'm looking at this coin and thinking VF20
based on the shield ,vest,etc.
But honestly I have little experience with the early SLQ's
so I don't know how much the date plays into the decision.

I agree it's been dipped though.

And the foreman rises from the jury box..... (sorry - so much of that going on these days)... The grade assigned by ANACS is F-12. No details. The coin has not been cleaned or dipped - just a bit too much light on it when I took the photo. For ANACS graded coins, that's a big victory since they have this overwhelming need to stamp anything the least bit suspicious as "cleaned". I'm happy with the grade, but I know it would have graded considerably higher with less wear on the date. Still, that's a high value coin that's in my SLQ set. My other two I sent in were a 1921 and 1919-S. I'll post them for grading guesses later on... Thanks all for your inputs! Paleoguy

Nice! I would have thought VG-10. It really all depends on how much impact they figure the date has on the grade. I have seen these make as low as AG-3 with one digit visible in spite of having the shield fully outlined.
